Rice Companies History



Chris Rice became a third-generation president and CEO of Rice Companies in 2008. In addition to leading a team of 140+ employees, Chris cultivates relationships with new and long term clients. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado and is a past president of the St. Cloud Builders Exchange, three term Advisory Council member for Butler Manufacturing, 5 under 40 winner, ABC of Minnesota/ North Dakota Board Member, active with numerous peer groups, and is LEED AP certified.

Today, Rice Companies encompasses Architectural and Engineering services, General Contracting, Construction Management, Development, Real Estate Brokerage, Maintenance and other field services, operating out of our six offices throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and South Dakota.


Chief Financial Officer
Chris Schuver joined Rice Companies in July 2014 as the CFO and boasts 13 years experience in the industry. As a graduate of St. John’s University, Chris previously worked as the Vice President of Business Banking with American Heritage National Bank. He also brings construction experience to Rice through numerous development projects, including procuring the financing, monthly balancing of the construction projects and distribution of funds. Chris enjoys golfing, umpiring, exercising and spending time with his family.

He gives back to the community by serving on the board for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Minnesota, acting as treasurer for the Central MN Noon Optimist Club and as an active member of St. Francis of Xavier Church.


President – Fargo

Marius Rygg joined Rice Companies in August, 2018 as Vice President – Mankato. Marius is a native of Portland, ND, and is a graduate of North Dakota State College of Science with a degree in Architectural Drafting and Estimating. He has over 30 years of experience in the commercial construction industry, with the last several years managing the commercial building division and staff of a general contracting company in West Fargo, ND. He has been on several boards, was a two term Advisory Council member for Butler Manufacturing, and a 50% partner in development and ownership of a self-storage facility.

Marius enjoys golfing, running, traveling, and spending time with his family.


President – Sauk Rapids

Steve Nelson has been with Rice Companies since 1997. He holds a degree in Building Construction Drafting and Estimating from St. Cloud Technical College.

With Steve’s 30+ years of experience in the construction industry, he brings a wide variety of skills and knowledge to the Rice Companies team. As the company has grown over the years, Steve has played a key role in developing additional services to offer our clients, including Rice’s Service division of Facility Maintenance and Service. 

Outside of working with Rice Companies, Steve enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time at his lake house. 


Senior Vice President of Pre-Construction

Tom Bruce rejoined Rice in 2017 and draws from his 30+ years of relationships in architecture, development and construction experience to bring a unique perspective to Rice’s Design/Build projects. Tom graduated with degrees from NDSU and became a licensed architect in 1989.

Tom lives in St. Cloud and is heavily involved in community organizations, including many facility boards, St. Cloud Diocese Building Commission, Builder’s Exchange, Catholic Charities, AIA MN Code Committee, numerous youth sports organizations as a board member and coach, Anna Marie’s Alliance, Youth for Christ, Cathedral High School Hockey Coach and an active member of the Church of St. Paul. 


Senior Vice President of Operations

Travis Lund joined Rice Companies in 2013. He attended Vermillion Community College in Ely, MN and NDSU in Fargo, ND. Travis started in commercial construction in 1994 as a carpenter and has worked as a foreman, traveling superintendent, production manager, project manager, and senior project manager. Travis oversees project management, and field operations and production including equipment and site safety. 

Travis and his wife Stacy are the proud parents of 3 children and stay busy keeping up with their activities. Travis is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, fishing, home projects, dog training, and traveling. Travis and his family, and their 3 dogs, reside near Sauk Rapids, MN.


General Manager – Glencoe

Michael Donnay joined the Rice team in Glencoe in early 2019 after graduating from MSU-Mankato with a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management.

Michael was born and raised in Glencoe and currently resides in town. In his free time Michael enjoys hunting, fishing and volunteering with the local wrestling team.


General Manager – Mankato

Joey Barr joined the Rice team in 2023 as General Manager of our Mankato location. He has been working in the construction industry for over 10 years and most recently as a Project Development Manager with another construction group.

He grew up in Mankato, MN where he attended Mankato East High School. He went on to Ellsworth Community College and Grand View University, and then graduated from St. Cloud State University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management.

When he’s not hard at work, he’s spending time with his wife of 15 years, Briana, and their twins, Jase and Bexley. He enjoys watching his kids participate in their many various activities, as well as being an avid golfer. 


Director of Field Operations

Joe Gubbels joined the Rice Companies team in February of 2013. Prior to Rice, Joe was in the National Guard with advanced training in carpentry, masonry and cross trained while in Iraq and the Philippines with local workers, materials and tools. He has over 14 years of diverse experience in the field and extensive experience in all aspects of construction types and safety.

In Joe’s free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters working on projects at home, shooting sporting clay league and hunting.


Senior Operations Manager

Shane Steckler joined Rice Companies in the Spring of 2019, coming to us with 20+ years of commercial construction experience. He is a graduate of North Dakota State College of Science with a degree in Architectural Drafting and Estimating.

Shane, his wife Sarah and their two sons enjoy spending time at the lake fishing, hunting or playing with their dogs, and reside in the Fargo area.


Senior Project Manager

Rian Demarais joined Rice Companies in May of 2014 as project manager. He brings over 20 years of experience in the construction trades, having worked with a number of local firms.

Rian enjoys hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.


Senior Project Manager

Ron Molitor joined Rice Companies in November 2014, after earning a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management from North Dakota State University. Ron’s knowledge of the construction industry, ability to seek out areas for improvement, and quickly implement a solution, makes him an asset to our growing team.

In addition to his work as a Senior Project Manager, Ron is also a licensed real estate agent for our real estate division, Rice Real Estate Services. He is also an active board member of the CMBA and the Tools for Schools program

When he’s not hard at work, Ron enjoys spending time with his family outdoors hunting and fishing.


Senior Project Manager

Jesse has a degree in architecture from NDSU and has spent his career delivering complex Design/Build projects. He comes to Rice with significant experience in design and preconstruction services as well as project management and business development.

Jesse is a lifelong Red River Valley resident and lives in Fargo with his wife Jen and three children; Brenna, Crosby and Shelby. When he’s not working, he can be found supporting his kids’ activities and spending the weekend at their lake cabin on Leech Lake.


Project Manager II

Dan Beaving joined the Rice Companies team as Project Manager II in 2021. He is a graduate of U of M – Moorehead with a B.S. in Construction Management. He brings over 14 years of experience in the commercial construction industry. His most recent experience coming from working as a Project Manager for Shingobee Builders.

Dan describes himself as a career forward individual that takes a lighthearted approach to conflict resolution. His motto, “every problem has a solution”.

In Dan’s free time, he enjoys motorsports such as dirt bikes, boats, and ATVs. He is also an avid hunter and fisher.


Project Manager I

Andy Kunkel joined Rice Companies Glencoe team in 2022 with a background in construction and manufacturing.

Originally from Sauk Rapids, Andy now lives in Hutchinson with his wife, Jana, and their three children (Natalie, Dylan, and Ethan). They are also the proud parents of two German Shorthair Pointers named Dutch and Fritz!

When Andy isn’t working, you’ll find him spending time at his cabin, fishing, hunting, and chasing the kids around to different events.


Project Manager I

Andy Wilson joined Rice Companies in 2014. As a project Manager, Andy brings 27 years of construction experience in field work, customer service and leadership.

Outside of work, Andy enjoys coaching girls hockey, camping with family and friends, pheasant hunting, gardening, BBQing and cooking.


Project Manager

Taunya is passionate about construction and has been surrounded by it her entire life. Joining the Rice team in the summer of 2008, her primary responsibilities included project designing and, most recently, transitioning to project management. Her degree in Architectural Construction Technology compliments her experience working in the residential and commercial industry for over 25 years. In addition, she has obtained certifications that help her excel in the industry. Taunya always strives to improve herself and is an excellent asset to the Rice team.

When she’s not at work, she enjoys camping, fishing, ATV, and spending time with her family and friends.


Project Manager I

Tony Fischer joined the Rice Companies team in the spring of 2021 as a Project Manager, based in our Fargo office. He holds an accounting degree from Moorhead State University and has worked in the construction industry for over 18 years.

Outside of work, Tony enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and car restoration.


Senior Project Superintendent

Jeremy Scheeler started in June of 2011 with years of experience and a degree in Carpentry from St. Cloud Technical College.

Jeremy came to Rice Companies from a referral from a current employee and has since then become a very influential leader on our field crew. 

When he’s not working, Jeremy is happy doing just about anything outdoors.


Senior Project Superintendent

Ryan Sutherland joined Rice Companies in 2016 with several years of experience in many different rolls and trades. Concrete, wood framing, finish carpentry, estimating, project management and field leadership. His wide knowledge of the construction industry make him as asset to our crew.

When he’s not at work, he enjoys hunting, fishing, traveling, camping and spending time with his family.


Project Administrator
Amy comes to the Rice Companies team with a background in administrative work with some legal. Most recently, she was working as a Project Legal Assistant with Blattner.

Amy grew up in Sauk Rapids, MN. She currently resides in Sartell with her husband, Artis. Combined they have three children, Ieva, Owen, Emmi, and an English Bulldog named Trump.

When she’s not working, she enjoys being outdoors, spending time with kids, fashion, shopping and trying new foods from around the world.


Senior Project Manager

Reece joined Rice’s facility maintenance team in 2016 as a sales manager. Now as Director of Service, Reece is responsible for partnering with both new and existing clients on their maintenance and operational needs and helping the Rice team provide cost effective solutions. Reece came to Rice with a background working for a Fortune 500 company in the construction/ industrial distribution industry and has experience in sales, supply chain management, account management and problem solving.

Reece enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and most importantly spending time with his wife Rebekka and their two girls.


Senior Service Project Manager

Dan started with Rice Companies as a Carpenter in 2006, and since then has held many different roles including General Superintendent and recently as Facilities Maintenance Manager. In his current role, Dan is responsible for estimating, proposals and scheduling our maintenance staff.

Outside of the office, Dan enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking, riding his motorcycle and weight lifting.


Service Sales Manager

Adam Kube joined Rice Companies in 2019 as the Salesperson for the Maintenance Division out of the Glencoe Office. Adam has a degree in Sales and Marketing, he also brings with him years of vast sales experience and strong relationships in the market. Adam resides in Mayer with his wife and two sons

When he is not working, Adam enjoys spending time with his family by coaching his sons football, baseball and basketball teams, the Minnesota outdoors, by either fishing, golfing or relaxing in his neighborhood.  


Service Sales

Chris Herman joined Rice Companies in June of 2020 as part of the Facility, Repair and Maintenance Sales team. He has spent his entire career in sales, focusing on the construction industry. He has since been expanding the Rice Companies’ name and territory for Facility, Repair and Maintenance Services, along with new construction, within Fargo-Moorhead and the surrounding areas.

His long history in this community has been beneficial in building lasting partnerships, and growth in the region.

You can find Chris at the lake cabin in the summers, enjoying sports, golfing, running, being involved in the community, and spending time with his son.


Director of Estimating

Matt Knutson joined Rice Companies in 2017 as our first dedicated estimator, now leading a team of 3 full time estimators. Along with leading the estimating department, Matt works closely with new and existing clients on the front end of projects, evaluating their needs and ensuring the design meets their budget. Matt holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Bemidji State University with an emphasis in Construction Management and stays active in Rice Companies Safety Program as a committee member.

Matt and his wife Katie enjoy spending time with their children at numerous activities. He is an avid outdoorsman, is involved with St. Cloud Youth Hockey, St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce and Ducks Unlimited.


Michelle joined Rice Companies in the summer of 2019 as an estimator, coming to us with years of experience in commercial and agricultural construction. She is a 2008 graduate of Minnesota State University in Mankato with a degree in Construction Management and Interior Design.

In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband Jason and sons Matthew and Aaron, biking, stamping homemade greeting cards, and volunteering at church in Hutchinson.


Director of Design & Engineering

Don Larsen joined Rice in 2011. He holds a degree from North Dakota State University and has been practicing Architecture since 1993. He has extensive experience with various building types, including retail, hospitality, health care, municipal and education buildings.

In his spare time, Don enjoys woodworking, reading and landscaping. Don is an active member of St. Francis of Xavier church where he volunteers for various committees and outreach projects.


Structural Engineer

Ryan Seavert began his career in structural engineering design in 1997. This has included wood structures and buildings, concrete and masonry design, steel framed structures & buildings, light gauge steel stud design, metal building foundation design, helical anchor foundation design, aluminum and stainless steel design, and forensic inspections for construction problems and building deficiencies. Ryan graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Indiana in 1997.

Ryan and his wife Jill enjoy spending time with family, fishing, reading, and watching their two sons compete and perform. He is an assistant basketball coach at Becker High School.


Civil Engineer

Will Huston is a licensed civil engineer with experience in residential and commercial development beginning in 2000. He is experienced in all aspects of a project from land acquisition and planning through design construction and project close-out.

Will is involved in many civic and community organizations including the Central MN Builders Association, St. Cloud Chamber, St. Cloud Area SERTOMA, and Avon Township. Will received his BSCE from Michigan Tech and still enjoys visiting the UP multiple times a year for snowmobiling and wheeling/dirt biking with friends and family.

Other family hobbies include: hiking, skating, hunting, and golfing.


Architectural Associate

Josh Meiners joined Rice Companies in 2021. Graduating with both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. 

He completed his 2-year internship program with Wold Architects & Engineering, where he gained experience in the industry. Josh especially enjoys BIM and scanning along with other newer technology Rice Companies’ Architectural Design + Engineering department has to offer.

Outside the office, he enjoys biking and hiking on statewide trails and parks, golfing with friends, and small woodworking/restoration projects. He also loves to experiment with VR and occasionally plays videogames with friends and family.


Project Design Manager

Wes Schoenherr graduated from St. Cloud Technical College with a degree in Architectural Construction Technology and has worked at Rice Companies since 2011. He has gained an excellent knowledge of BIM processes, visualization software, and project development.

In his spare time, Wes enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, running, and participating in local autocross events. He also serves on the Architectural Construction Technology Advisory Board.


Project Design Specialist
Danielle came to Rice Companies in 2018 with experience working in both Architectural and Structural office environments. She now specializes in interior finishes and design within our Architectural team. She graduated in 2012 with a degree in Architectural Design.

When Danielle is not working, she and her husband keep busy with their three kids and the beef farm they own. They also enjoy heading to the lake to relax.


Project Designer I

Austin Pingel joined Rice Companies in 2019 as a Carpenter Assistant while attending school at SCTCC. After graduating with a degree in Architectural Construction Technology, Austin became a Project Designer, working with our architects and engineers. His previous experience in underground utilities, concrete, and landscaping come in handy in his current role.

In his spare time, Austin enjoys spending time doing outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing.


Director of Human Resources
Tonya Inselman is a seasoned leader in the field of Human Resources. She earned a degree in Business Management from St. Cloud State University, is a certified professional in human resources (PHR), has served several terms on the board for the Central Minnesota Society of Human Resources Professionals and brings a strong background in providing leadership and direction in the establishment and execution of HR driven Talent Management strategies, plans and tactics.

Outside of work, Tonya enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, raising free-range chickens and exploring the outdoors. She is involved in community theatre, an avid yoga enthusiast and serves on several United Way, Greater St. Cloud Development, and youth support committees.


Senior Accounting Manager

Geoffrey Delp has been working in a bookkeeping/accounting environment ever since graduating high school. He worked at a local bank in Salem, Oregon until his move to Minnesota in the 1990’s. In 1995, Geoff started at Rice Companies and attained his Bachelors of Arts in Computer Information Systems from the College of St. Scholastica in 2006.

Geoff enjoys gardening, walking, riding bicycle, reading, golf, and his family. He serves as Parish Council President at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Morrill.


Project Coordinator
Jennifer Rice graduated from St. Cloud State University in 2002, and joined Rice Companies the same year. Jennifer utilizes her many years of experience by working on subcontracts, change orders, accounts payable, marketing and more.

Jennifer enjoys spending time at the cabin, downhill skiing, crossfit, working out and spending time with family.


Safety Manager

Cory Dukowitz joined Rice Companies in 2021 and brings over 15 years of professional experience in safety, quality, and continuous improvement to Rice Companies. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and watching his boys play sports, remodeling and working on projects at their home, and getting out on the lake and enjoying all the activities.


Information Technology Manager

Charlie joined Rice Companies in 2021 as our Information Technology Manager. Graduating from SCSU with a degree in engineering, Charlie brings over 25 years of knowledge and experience to the team. He has an impressive background in Information Technology, IT Management and Manufacturing Engineering.

Charlie and his wife are the parents of two grown children and one grandson. Charlie enjoys building and repairing things, time at the lake, hunting, fishing, and watching movies.


Talent Acquisition & Recruitment Specialist

Bailey Lindbom joined the Rice team in 2022 with a degree in Business Management from Bemidji State University. She has been working in recruitment since 2014.

Bailey is from Sauk Rapids where she and her son (Bennett) currently reside.

When Bailey is not working she enjoys coaching volleyball, spending time with her family at the lake, and shooting photography for friends and family.


Administrative/Accounting Assistant

Kim Whaley joined our team in 2022 with a background in construction
and year of experience using Administrative skills.

Kim grew up and resided in Sauk Rapids for most of her life, and now lives in Sartell with her husband, 3 kids and 2 dogs.

When not working, Kim enjoys boating around the lake with family, camping, going to the casino with friends, and being outdoors with her kids.

Coborn’s challenged the Rice Companies team to develop a new prototype store that included many “green” features in an effort to help Coborn’s pursue a healthier, greener grocery store with a lower operating cost. The result is a next generation concept store designed for operating in smaller cities and markets.

With a construction timeline of only 17 weeks, this fast-track design/build project was completed in record time. Located in St. Joseph, Minnesota, Coborn’s is a 38,419 SF Grocery Store that is open 24 hours a day and includes a liquor store, dry-cleaning, pet food department and a drive-thru pharmacy. Its unique design includes a left-handed store, a first for Coborn’s in its 90 years in business. New methods of servicing customers, maintaining and cleaning store departments and operating a store with environmental controls were challenges to the entire team.

Winner of an 2012 ABC Construction in Excellence Award – Renovation $1 to $5 Million Pyramid Award

Located in the heart of downtown St. Cloud near SCSU, the West 200 Block is a 9,395 SF multiple-tenant building currently home to Chipotle, Noodles & Company and Verizon. Originally home to the world’s oldest Ford dealership, this repurposed mid-century modern brick structure attracts today’s savvy retailers with a unique blend of interesting spaces, prime visibility and the energy of a vibrant downtown, all while preserving a historical part of the community.

Opening in Fall 2013, Southgate Crossing is one of the largest retail complexes Rice Companies has completed in North Dakota, spanning four buildings and more than 160,000 SF. RCI constructed the shell as well as the interior build-outs of the largest building – Lot 3 – which includes Cash Wise, Shoe Carnival, Petco and Gordman’s. RCI also completed the shell of Lot 5, an 11,000 SF building that houses Cash Wise Liquor, Great Clips, Fancy Nails, as well as the interior work for the liquor store.

Winner of a 2012 Heritage Preservation Award

Rice Building Systems was awarded the contract to preserve a century old historical building as part of the 5th Avenue Live! Redevelopment project. Originally built in 1891 as Benson Brothers Grocery Store, this two-story red pressed brick building is now home to Brother’s Bar & Grill – 10,825 SF – and the EnduRUNce Shop – 2,000 SF.

In 2016 Coborn’s challenged Rice Companies to design and build a next generation grocery in Isanti, MN.  As a ground-up prototype, this store emphasizes fresh throughout, with large produce, meat and deli departments, along with a 2nd floor featuring a test kitchen and seating area.  The 51,101 SF development includes self-service fuel pumps, Caribou Coffee, Pharmacy and automated car wash.

St. John’s Prep, Minnesota’s oldest secondary school, awarded Rice Companies the design/build contract for Bede Hall. This four-story, 23,500 SF required a compatible design executed with conventional steel framing, built-up roof and brick walls. RCI also joined the new building with a connector to a campus landmark designed many years earlier by a notable modernist architect. The project was completed in 2008.

In 2020, Rice Companies partnered with Northwestern Mutual to Design, Build & Lease a new 10,038 SF corporate office in south Cloud.  This new development started with our Real Estate group identifying potential properties and our Architectural group working with NWM on space needs and design criteria.  The master planned facility includes space for expansion, breakroom, conference areas, and both private and open office spaces.

In 2005, Cold Spring Brewery contracted Rice Companies to build a 96,000 square foot distribution center and warehouse. The next year, RCI completed an addition of 113,280 square feet and in 2007, built a second distribution center measuring 192,000 square feet.

The 10.6-acre site includes two warehouses with 20 loading docks and two drive-in doors and 139,336 square foot paved parking lot with 57 automobile stalls and 29 trailer stalls.

Rice Companies recently completed a 76,475 SF freezer, cooler, dry storage and maintenance addition to Appert’s Foodservice (now Sysco Foodservice). The design consisted of precast double tee walls and roof panels, high performance industrial floors using Shrinkage compensating concrete to minimize control joints, highly detailed roof and wall systems to eliminate air infiltration, and adding a fire protection system throughout the facility using a 350,000 gallon underground tank and onsite wells for water supply.

This expansion included complete coordination of the construction, refrigeration and racking systems. Energy savings were also introduced through new LED lighting in the cooler and freezer.
